The number 144,000 is most commonly known from the Bible's Book of Revelation
The number 144,000 appears three times :
Revelation 7:3–8: " saying: "Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of God on their foreheads."

My experiences reading religious chats and forums has shown me that most folks think this number refers to a group of 144,000 special virgins, sometimes claimed to be part of some sort of " Jesus army ", sometimes the claim is that they will become martyrs for Jesus, or help him rule from some magical palace in the sky
However, phrasing in literature from the Bible's day, as well as prior, would have used terms like " births " and " virgins ", " conception ", etc, as terms in Omen texts dealing with mathematical astronomy and ephemerides, so 99% of modern exegesis usually falls flat with Revelation because it ignores priestly literary traditions of the time
My experiences studying mathematics, and specifically the mathematical astronomy / astrometry of Mesopotamian and Egyptian priests, has shown me that this number, like the triangular numbers 666, 153 and 2701, were used as aids in calculation of things like eclipse cycles
144 would belong to the class of square numbers, as used by Egyptian priests for binary calculations

As outlined in my 7 seals thread, these numbers were used in astronomy calculations, here specifically, deriving the dimensionless number 400 from the approximate diameters of the Moon and the Sun

These tables I have constructed are also likely are, or are related to, the source of the ridiculously long lifespans of the Sumerian King's list
The duration of a part or Hebrew time unit the " chelek " equals the earlier Babylonian barleycorn (pronounced she), the smallest Babylonian time unit, which was 1/72 of a time degree. This power of 144 appears when we use the Moon's angular diameter to determine it's distance
Dividing this figure by 2, we get the distance to the moon = 229,000 miles. ( Note that this figure represents the distance to moon from the earth's surface, not from its center )
